(Group Project) Week 1 - Our Plans and Decisions

Having been assigned to a group with three other MM students (Aaron Cracknell, Richard King and Stuart Norton), I and the others went to the Museum of Power at Langford, Maldon

During our guided trip around the place, we came across a particular steam pump which was of interest to us straight away - it was bright red and make a fantastically-steam-age antique racket...

The Joseph Evans Reliable Steam Pump

^The information board in front of the pump - a pump bought for £10 in 1987!^

Critical Measurements

- The pump is 4 feet long, 2 feet wide and 4 feet high

- It has a 4" steam cylinder, 2" pumping cylinder w/ 4" stroke and a 24" diameter flywheel (double acting)

Our first group meeting will decide each of our roles and most importantly, choose a scale which all four of us will work from - be it US/UK Metric, Imperial or ISO (doing this will then narrow down the chances of mismatched measurements and improper scaling!)

A Powerpoint presentation will be undertaken in the 2nd week which will present our choice of machinary, roles posed and some early design decisions
